How many books do you and your family have on your bookshelves or in your personal library? How many of them are for your children? How about labeling these books with bookplates.
You could make them yourself or have them made for you. Simply start with labels that meet with your taste and ones that will fit on the inside front cover of your books. Smaller book labels for children's books such as the ones that are paperbacks or larger hardbound books deserve different bookplates.
You can place different images such as the cute doggie on your book plate labels above and add a message on the book label such as "Congratualtions Joe on your Graduation" or "This Book Donated by Aunt Polly" and truly make the book memorable when opened at a later date.
